ACADEMY MORTICIANS
This is the band that started it all. Born from the ashes of my best friend’s Oasis covers band, Sovereign, and first called Doogle, then Cabal, then Lifeless Goat, before finally settling on Academy Morticians (because we were in school, and wanted to set up “the academy” for burial, see?), I went from not knowing how to play a musical instrument at all to becoming a singer, songwriter and co-frontperson in a band. A band which started out by booking out our school hall to put on DIY punk shows and releasing our own EP, and graduated to playing local pubs, touring the UK, supporting bands like Mad Caddies, Showbusiness Giants and Citizen Fish, and getting releases out on a slew of independent labels such as Smoking’ Troll, Crackle, and Iron Man before imploding in 2001 due to creative and personal differences between myself and my best friend. A year or so later we buried the hatchet and since then have been Best Man at each other’s weddings. In 2010 we had a triumphant reunion show at the Adam and Eve in Birmingham and in 2014 we reunited once again from the three corners of the globe where we live (The Midlands, Oxford and Sweden respectively) to record and self-release a new EP to little or no acclaim but lots of self-enjoyment. Before Covid 19 killed live music we had toyed with the idea of making our reunion shows a ten yearly once every decade phenomenon, but currently such plans are on hold. Importantly though, no longer broken up, Academy Morticians remain, theoretically, a going concern, who might rise from their grave again any day now with new material.
